Thoughts About Vaping

The people at VapeSense have kindly allowed me to share with you my thoughts and experiences with vaping and so from time to time I will post to this diary.

I must say from the outset that I am somewhat new to the vaping world and still struggle with the new vocabulary let alone the technology.

example of a sub ohm kitThe aficionados who cloud chase with drips using sub-ohms might as well be speaking a different language and listening to them compare inhales with exhales using 40watts as opposed to 20 watts simply confuses me.

Thus you will gather that I am never going to impress you with my skills as a vaper….but hopefully my posts will amuse you if nothing else.

My vaping journey started properly May 2016. I had tried various e cigarettes but was not impressed. They just did not hit the spot and never seemed to last very long.

And holding or drawing on a cigarette did not feel right anyway as I have been a pipe smoker for about forty years. I missed the weight of the bowl in my hand.

Missing the habits

In fact anyone who has successfully given up smoking will tell you that the hardest part of giving up is the removal of the habit and not the nicotine.

Friends tell me that even after 20 years they still miss having a smoke after a special meal or when they get into the car or whenever they used to regularly light up.

And pipe smokers just love fiddling around with their pipe. Take that big dummy away and they feel lost and don’t know what to do with their hands.

Smokers are people too

For most of my life smoking was a perfectly acceptable form of social behaviour. Now smokers have become social lepers whose very presence is an affront to decent effect of smoking

Smokers are told that they smell like ashtrays and are endangering the lives of others by inflicting their disgusting habit.

The result is that there is a great social pressure to quit and be normal…..and miserable.

Admit to your Addiction

Smokers will never give up until they actually want to. They are addicts and as such they must have a reason to make that radical change to their habits.

Wikipaedia defines addiction as “a state characterized by compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli, despite adverse consequences.”

We all know that smoking can lead to lung cancer amongst many other terrible organ failures/diseases and yet we keep doing it.

Intellectually we know that it is bad for us…….but we enjoy it.

And therein lies the problem. To the individual the reward outweighs the risk as the reward is instant whereas the risk is deferred or may never happen.

You can eat all the right things….exercise properly….reduce alcohol…give up smoking…and still be run over by a bus.

Or die from flu…which I am told kills more people each year than lung cancer does. Are they going to ban flu I wonder?

So until the individual decides that they want to give it up…they wont.

And what influences that decision will be different in every case as we are all individuals.

Choosing What Works For You

In my case it was my teeth that finally made up my mind. The pipe had made them go yellow but that had turned to a deep brown which I did not like.

Having spoken with my dentist about the dangers/advantages of various teeth whitening procedures I decided that I had to look for a better way.

My choices seemed to be either to give up the pipe…bad…or watch my teeth go browner so that my smile would disappear out of embarrassment….very bad.

Then it occurred to me that I might be able to have the best of both worlds.

example of an epipeI met up with an old friend who during a business meeting pulled out a pipe and started puffing on it.
It was an e-pipe…but it looked and felt just like a real pipe!

Was this my answer?

I decided to give it a try and will tell you of the first disaster in my next post but let me make one thing very clear.

I am not and will not say that smoking is a good thing. Nor will I say that vaping is a good habit to start.

But if you don’t really want to give up smoking then vaping is more than just a socially acceptable alternative.

I do suggest that you watch this video that goes out of its way to give you facts rather than convince you one way or the other. At the end of the day it is …and should always be….your choice.
